As one of three statues of beloved King Kamehameha I, the sculpture represents the deep respect Hawaiians feel for the ruler who united the islands, even under the scrutiny of Western rule. The statue was designed by American artist T.R. Gould in the late 1880s. It is located in front of the Ali'Iolani Hall in the heart of downtown while the other two statues are located in Kapaau, Hawaii and Washington, D.C.
